Last Friday’s ARTScrawl at Sumner & Dene gallery was the opening art reception and book signing of Angus Macpherson’s new book “Paintings ~ Quotes ~ Artist’s Notes.” The entire second floor of the gallery was filled with Macpherson’s images, acrylic paintings of dramatic skies, often in radiant translucent layers of twilight and dawn hues with fluid compositions of the grand and intimate simultaneously. Well-known for his ability to juxtapose the chaos and absolute serenity of nature in his dramatic landscapes, many of which are derived from the balance of ever-changing skies to earth over his native New Mexico. Macpherson’s paintings reveal explosions of color in which the results are not necessarily predictable yet create breathtaking beauty in all directions.
A third generation New Mexican, Macpherson has been painting professionally since 1983. He was the 2009 University of New Mexico (UNM) Alumni Poster Artist. UNM acquired the original of the poster to be in their permanent collection. In September 2009, The Albuquerque Art Business Association recognized Macpherson as a “Local Treasure” at the Albuquerque Museum. Sumner & Dene owner, Roy Sumner Johnson, whom represented Macpherson back in the 80's and 90's says, "Its a dream come true to be able to showcase Angus' work again. Angus paints that powerful yet dreamy scenery that we all identify as the ultimate New Mexico skyscape. His work fits into all our environments whether its contemporary, southwestern or eclectic.” 
Macpherson is also the author of three books. "You Are Here" features 71 of his mystical paintings. “Please Pass the Paintings & Pasta & Pie" is a cookbook featuring Macpherson’s paintings and recipes from his art collectors spanning the last 29 years. Finally, his new book "Paintings~Quotes~Artist's Notes," a fundraising effort containing his new paintings, favorite quotes from some of his collectors and notes on art from Macpherson.
